Mathematical modeling
Mathematical modeling has been used for several years in water management and environmental protection. Modeling is mainly used for the optimization and protection of groundwater pumping schemes, simulation of floods and flood prevention, predication of contaminant spreading in the subsoil and its effective removal. Mathematical models are used for groundwater flow (MODFLOW, AQUIFEM, FEFLOW, VISTA), flow of soil gas (AIRFLOW/SVE), surface water flow (MIKE 11), transport o pollutants in the saturated zone (MT3D, BIOSCREEN, BIOCHLOR), gas emissions to the atmosphere (ISLT3, ISCS3) or geochemical interaction (PHREEQC).
Mathematical modeling of groundwater flow: modeling groundwater level, speed and direction of flow, isochrone of residence time, water balance, reduction in groundwater level, interference of wells in the change of chemistry, spread of contamination, natural attenuation.
Mathematical modeling of surface water: modeling of flood-prone areas, transformation of flood wave, effectiveness of flood prevention measures, rainfall-runoff ratios, modeling of water flow in river catchment.
Hydrochemical modeling: direct and indirect hydrochemical modeling, water mixing, groundwater and surface water interaction
